Duitsland kent een complex landschap voor gegevensbescherming door zijn federale structuur, met 16 deelstaatautoriteiten (Landesdatenschutzbeauftragte) en de federale BfDI. De federale autoriteit houdt toezicht op telecom en postdiensten, terwijl de deelstaatautoriteiten de overige sectoren bestrijken.
